Carline Thistle

Out at Conington today, a site situated on the edge of the fens, which catches the full force of the wind. Today's moderate breeze felt remarkably strong, and made it very difficult to work. It was probably perfect conditions for bringing the harvest home (see extra), now an industrial and high-tech operation, but still interesting to watch the level of synchronisation.

One of my favourite late summer flowers, Carline Thistle, was at its best -  a surprisingly rich tapestry of purple and gold when viewed closely. This species appeared at the site quite a few years ago, but for a long time there were only be one or two plants each year, sometimes none, and I was never sure whether it would become established. However, this year there must have been well over a hundred plants in several areas, so finally I'm confident it will persist, provided the site continues to be managed.

While I was working I received a phone call from Alex to say that one of Charley's housemates has got Covid. He was supposed to come home this morning but is staying put until they get the results of the PCR tests they had this morning. They're both double vaccinated, and haven't spent very much time with the person, so hopefully all will be well.
