August’s Purple

In June, Foxgloves dominate, in July, it’s Rosebay Willowherb. Now August is here, the heather on our local moorlands is resplendent.
Today I did a butterfly count at Longshaw. Nothing new or exotic, but a pleasing total considering how breezy it was. This is the bottom end of the Hollow Way - my favourite part of the route as it is sheltered and often yields the most butterflies and other insects. At this time of year, the steep sides are covered in heather and gorse.
