Update

Our daughter was released from the hospital yesterday with a diagnosis of SCAD (Spontaneous coronary artery dissection -- or a torn artery).  It's a relatively new diagnosis for which the American Heart Assoc only issued a scientific statement in 2018.  Lots of unknowns yet, including what causes it and how to treat it.

She was lucky her ER doctor consulted with a cardiologist because the symptoms are similar to a heart attack but if treated as such, it could actually kill the patient...  What's know: it disproportionally affects young women (20-50 years old) who are perfectly healthy, thin, and with no preexisting conditions.  The bad news: it can reoccur (3% chance of it each year); pregnancy is not recommended; certain types of exercises (of course all the ones she does: mountaineering, climbing, volleyball, extreme sports) are not advisable.  She is now on 4 different types of meds (for months/years possibly her entire life) and says because of that, she "feels like an old person".  Other side effects are mental: because you don't know when to expect this to happen, there is constant anxiety and sometimes depression...

My husband is flying out tomorrow to spend a week with her and her husband.  He's a rock and very level-headed and that's what she needs now.  Why am I not going? I found out last week I need lung surgery to remove a suspicious nodule (scheduled at the end of the month) and my doc doesn't want me mixing it up with airport crowds and stupid non-vaccinated travelers...

When it rains.... blah.
