Too Much Time on My Hands

People often ask me “how on earth do you fill your days now you’re retired”? Well, it’s not easy and sometimes you just have to do those little jobs that waste - sorry, fill - the maximum amount of time, require very little mental effort and produce bugger all in the way of tangible, life altering results.
Today has been one of those days. I started by filling all the little holes in the new architraves, to cover up the fixing nails. This is something the decorators would have done in due course but I had an almost full tube of wood filler and I was bored. Unfortunately, this did not fill as much time as hoped so I went for the big one - going through all my boxes and pots of screws and sorting them into size and type order.
And very satisfying it was too. A couple of hours frittered away, basically taking things out of tins and then putting them back in a slightly different order. To justify the effort (?) expended, I did throw away several rusty old screws and some fittings that were being kept as spares for items I ceased to own many years ago. Surprisingly, I did actually get rid of enough stuff to put one less tin back on the shelf in the garage. And I know that next time I want a screw, bolt or nail, I’ll be able to find it much more easily. In the hardware aisle at B&Q.
Sadly, all this strenuous activity has only taken us to lunchtime. Fortunately, being retired, I can now legitimately have a nap in the afternoon so that’s another hour taken care of. By the time I’ve practised a few more songs on the guitar and been to the gym, it will be teatime.
And with a pile of ironing to be dealt with this evening, I shall be able to retire to bed exhausted and inordinately satisfied with all that I have achieved (?) today. With the prospect of more of the same frenetic pace of life tomorrow, I really do wonder how I ever found time to go to work.
