North Wall

The Richmond River enters the Pacific Ocean at Ballina. Starting in the 1890s, 'training walls' were built to improve the navigability of the river mouth. The view is from the North Wall, looking north across Lighthouse Beach. 

Unfortunately, altering natural coastal systems often has unintended consequences. It's very likely that the Richmond River walls caused significant coastal erosion further north at Lennox Head. And that process may continue even further north, well into the future (D. Patterson 2009).
