Iceland day 10 - Grand finale at Fagradalsfjall
The last (full) day of the Iceland trip that I've been one of the guides for. Keflavik is relatively close to the volcano at Mount Fagradalsfjall. Dormant for 800 years, it came back to life in March. We looked at the live webcam images to see if it would be worth the one hour one-way walk up the mountains to capture the crater. It didn't look very promising (just some smoke coming out of the volcano but no lava), but part of our group wanted to go anyway. I hesitated but it was decided that I was going to drive the group that wanted to go.
At first we visited one of the lava fields that had been formed since the eruption started. Still warm, but otherwise solid. We were already glad we came, but it got even better once the smoke started to increase. We decided to start climbing and the further we got, the more orange we saw inside the volcano.
Once we had prepared our cameras, it was time to capture the volcano at sunset! I still can't quite believe we actually did this. I was still buzzing when we returned to our hotel...
Before all this, we visited Gjáin and made some images of the cascades that are there (see extra).
