Loafers Wall…

It’s not really used these days but when I was young there was always people leaning on it.

The Income Tax Office used to be in Fountain Street (just up the road from here) and had an upstairs annexe in half of the old badminton courts above the bonded stores. The boss had a gammy leg and limped and used a cane. This was the time of Monty Python and when the Ministry of Silly Walks episode aired we loved it! Every day at 12.30 we’d rush to the corner window that overlooked Loafers Wall and watch the boss limp down the road, put his arm out as he got to this pillar and slowly swing around it. Entertainment was free in this days…
