The Bells

Our holiday was punctuated by the sound of church bells. The day the new pope was elected, we realised it had happened as suddenly all the bells from the churches and local monastery started ringing.

We were woken every morning by the bells. The first morning we got rather a shock as we were woken by the bells chiming 9 times. I was amazed we had slept so long, but it was actually 7am. The hotel staff couldn't shed any light other than it was the bells from the Franciscan Convent next door. And every morning at 7am the bells rang 9 times. At other times the number of chimes was as expected.

This is the tower from the Church of Santa Ana which can be seen from all over town.
