The family home of Queen Victoria’s favourite Prime Minister. (So deliciously brought to the screen by Rufus Sewell.)

Normally, the house is open to the public in August when the family are away. It’s closed this year (as it also was last year.)

It’s very much a family home, with a welcoming and warm atmosphere. The Lady of the house is a notable painter and the staff who show you round in a normal year, will include the housekeeper and other fascinating members of staff.

We avoided the rain, and had a gentle wander in these wonderful and very quiet grounds.
