Birdie in a Box
Although it is not often talked about, sometimes there are accidents that take place during the Alternative Olympic Games. Participants eat each other despite every precaution being taken to prevent it. One year an entire team of ants was injured under the foot of a thoughtless human. Goldie here, suffered a concussion when she ran headlong into a window during the 100 meter tree to feeder dash, possibly mistaking the reflection in the glass for the real thing. Disaster was barely averted when Spike ran out the door in pursuit of his Kong but avoided stepping on her. She was conscious and extremely feisty when she was lifted from the ground, flapped her wings which appeared to be uninjured, and let her rescuers know exactly what she thought of them for disturbing her. She was taken to the medical tent where she was diagnosed and put into isolation to recover. All concussion protocols were immediately put into place, disqualifying her from the rest of the competition.
By the time this correspondent went to see how she was doing she had flown the coop shoebox and returned to the plum tree arena where the rest of her team awaited her. She has stayed on the sidelines cheering on her teammates and appears to be making an excellent recovery.
The entire medical staff is to be commended for their quick action and excellent care. They are also among the unsung heroes working behind the scenes to keep the athletes safe.
It has otherwise been a slow day here at the Wildwood venue. Many events have been cancelled due to smoke in the air exacerbated by rising temperatures. Bird feeding continues but speed and agility events have been cancelled or postponed.
