We braved the rain

 Mini holiday day two

We set off on our adventure and the weather was reasonably bright. 

We wind our way from Hawes through Simonstone towards Thwaite and Muker and head over the Buttertubs pass  - one of the highest roads in the Yorkshire dales, where we stop to see the twenty metre deep potholes (first extra) it is said that the name of the potholes came from the times when farmers would rest there on the way to market. During the hot weather they would lower the butter they made into the potholes to keep cool.

We climb over the pass and down the other side where we see the 18th century Banty barn (second extra) one of many cow houses in the Muker area. The weather deteriorated and the rain was sheeting down.

After Muker we took the road over to Askrigg where we stopped and had coffee and a slice of lemon drizzle cake. Then back  through Hawes and to visit the Ribblehead viaduct or Batty Moss viaduct. It carries the Settle to Carlisle railway across the Ribble valley. During construction over one hundred men lost their lives.

We return to Hawes and a must visit to the Wensleydale creamery where we purchased a selection of cheeses and some fruit cake.

All in all a nice day out.
