Brimstone butterfly
Thanks to everyone yesterday for putting the Small Copper on the Popular page!
Today we have the Brimstone butterfly.
It camouflages itself as a leaf when resting, the male here is a greenish yellow, the female whiter.
There are two flights each year, overwintering adults fly in the spring to lay a new generation, and these hatch out late summer and then feed before hibernation.
We are delighted that we now have a few each year in our garden. We planted the larval food plant Alder Buckthorn with them in mind and waited for ten or more years before seeing butterflies both in spring and in autumn. This suggests that they really are breeding here.
I think the lovely weather this summer has helped too!
