Glenfinnan Viaduct

It was another trip down memory lane for us this morning as many years ago, BC in fact (Before Children), Tony and I visited Glenfinnan.  He was working a season as an instructor at Loch Eil Outward Bound Centre, guiding ten day Skye Treks in awful weather.  I travelled up for his last week via bus with a dodgy few hours spent in Glasgow bus stations in the early hours, then at the end of his contract we drove north west around the coast, camping in quiet, sandy bays and tackling Munros.

On our last visit we were virtually the only folks in the small carpark and there was no track up above the viaduct.  Today we arrived in the company of a couple of hundred folks as it appeared the steam train was due to arrive!  There was a whole extra carpark (with the moneys going to the local community so that was good).  It was bizarre to see folks in Hogwarts outfits and children brandishing wands.  Just out of sight of my blip, folks were perched all over the hillside waiting to wave at the train as it passed.

Afterwards we waited till all had cleared then took a walk up the very quiet glen, before a cuppa and brief visit to the Monument and the viewing hill above the visitor centre.  A very different experience to our one in the 1970s!
