Heron
Our visit to G’s mum is usually preceded by a Spinnies trip, but today we abandon this in favour of a return to the reserve. It’s a gentle walk, and right now that suits.
The far-out tide means our viewing switches to the lagoons where we see young herons strutting their stuff, feathers messy and unkempt, crests limited to whispy strands of white.

Meanwhile, on the lake islands, congregations of vain egrets groom frantically.
