Balcarres Chapel

This tiny chapel was built in 1635 for Lord Lindsay of Balcarres, who is buried in the chapel. It is situated in a woodland close to Balcarres House on the Balcarres Estate.

Geordie and I went for a walk around the estate today. It was beautiful. We’ve walked here before, but we went further today. The estate is just behind The village of Colinsburgh.

Colin, The Third Earl of Balcarres took part in the 1715 Jacobite Rising. He later created the Estate village of Colinsburgh in appreciation for the support the local people and workers gave him, fighting alongside him during the rebellion.

Today we walked from Colinsburgh, heading north into the Estate, passing stunning examples of oak and beech, and sycamore and many others. We took the path behind the mansion, passing fields of horses and the walled garden, then round to the East where the tiny ruined chapel is situated. The small woodland in which it sits is well cared for. I found the chapel and situation just beautiful. I sat for a while on a tree stump feeling quite blissful. There are two memorial stones placed on the ground at the rear of the chapel. (Extra)
From there we headed off into the big wood to the East., crossing the Den burn several times in our wandering. We came to the pond, which in the autumn last year looked so lovely, but there was very little water in it. It really showed how badly we need substantial rain. (Extra)
We gradually made our way back to the rear of the mansion, then back down to Colinsburgh and home again.
We walked just over four and a half miles and it was really enjoyable. When we were in the shade of the woods the temperature was just fine. Out in the open it was warmer and became sunnier later in the afternoon.
Geordie was on the lead the whole walk, but didn’t seem to mind.
We passed not a single person on our walk. Just braw.
