March of the Walking Walnut...

I was busily trying for yet another bee on another flower, this time at NT Dyrham Park, when I spotted this dreadful looking fellow.

Like a meatball with too many cocktail sticks, or an alien walking walnut... he was diving into the echinops flowers with some enthusiasm not to mention agility... and then he saw the lens and started running towards it and me. Believe me, seeing him up close in the eyepiece, I gave way quite quickly!

I think he's cranefly tipula lateralis. The larvae live in the rotting vegetation in ponds such as the one at Dyrham. A bit of lens diffraction in this shot.
