The dropped stitch

figures in the mist

I had a day working on the island of Westray today.

The mist made it a poor day for tourists looking for views but it provided a wonderfully spooky backdrop for the scarecrow competition. From the first figure in bright yellow waterproofs which loomed out of the mist, to the realisation that there were scarecrows dotted all over the island, it became a day of scarecrow spotting.

The competition is a fund raiser for the lifeboats and it really seems to have caught the imagination of the whole community. A map marking the location of each of the 43 scarecrows, their names and the folk who made them can be bought for £1. You can vote for your favourite and second favourite. What fun for the children in their summer holiday, both making and then going round to look at the handiwork of all their friends and neighbours. Great fun for the tourists too and far easier to spot than a puffin.

I have included 3 more in extras.
