Like many cities, Bristol has a Victoria Park

Isn’t it beautiful.  I was doing various chores and errands this morning - I’m so lucky to be able to walk here while shopping locally.
Parks in towns and cities didn’t exist before 1840. It was assumed people could get to rural areas - which weren’t far away til the cities massively expanded in the industrial revolution. A parks movement developed - to provide sources of ‘healthful recreation’ .  One principle was that there be free entry, another that there must be grass for people to play games and take exercise. The Victorians grasped the concept of ‘public good’ unlike our esteemed leaders of today. I wonder how many Victoria Parks there are in the UK - a lot I expect.  I know the one in Hackney, near where I used to live.
