Between fen and mountains

A syphon and a monastery

Today’s walk took us through the remains of the Salver iron ore mine and through the woods to the famous 11th century monastery of Saint Michel the Cuixa. We had our lunch on the hill opposite where the siphon fills the irrigation canal. The water descends down a pipe on the opposite side of the valley at a higher elevation and the force of the water pushes up into the canal on the other side. It was a warm and muggy day. We had intended to walk high but realised that we would have been walking in the clouds so made a last minute change to our plans.
