Hard hat required.
Spanning the river Torridge, Grade I Listed Bideford bridge was completed around 1585 and replaced an oak bridge that had been there for a few hundred years prior. There are twenty four arches of varying width (approx. four to eight metres.)
A 1745 book showed it having a toll house, chapel, blacksmiths, stables, lime kiln and another small shop.
It has been widened a few times, once in 1800 with fine Penarth Ashlar stone. (How can you ignore that, Bob.) ;)
Many thanks to BobsBlips for hosting the bridge themed wide wednesday.
