Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

By Carol

2021 — Thursday with Tristan

We discovered today that Tristan rarely rides a bicycle and was not at all used to a bicycle with brake levers on the handlebars. He is used to pushing backwards on the pedals to stop a bike. That did not work at all today...Tristan stomped on the pedals and they did a free-spin backwards as the front wheel of the bike jumped the curb on the other side of our street and Tristan found himself smack dab in the middle of a tall shrub.

So Grandpa Fun got the beach cruiser out of the garage and put the ten-speed bicycle away. After a couple test runs in front of the house, Tristan had a bit of confidence. Grandpa hopped on his mountain bike and the two of them pedaled away.

Quite some time later, my phone received a text with photo showing me that they had the bicycles on the shore pedaling on the waters edge. The next text arrived a while later at about 4:00 p.m. asking me if I wanted a burger from the gas station deli. A deli in a gas station sounds crazy, but this is a beach town. The gas station deli makes the best burgers in town.

I immediately responded with a text that said “Come home! I’ll make spaghetti.” The next text that arrived on my phone was confessing that Tristan had just eaten a gas station burger and Was asking if I wanted one too.

Well shoot! I don’t want to cook dinner for two guys that aren’t hungry. So I said to bring home a burger for me. This is the third night in a row that dinner was usurped by food purchased elsewhere.

There were lots of other details in our Thursday, but none more funny than watching Tristan learn about bicycle brakes, and none more delicious than my unplanned dinner of a gas station burger.

The two pups would like for me to note that they did not get a walk today.
