Salusand
We camped about 100 metres from a small road last night. There was very little traffic and so it was really quiet. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case this morning. From about 6 o’clock we were woken, and kept awake, by the roar of cars and lorries. People here like to start work early and a large number of double trailed timber trucks sped along the road, interspersed with cars making use of a 2 kilometre straight stretch to get well above the speed limit.
Once we were fully awake and dressed everyone had obviously picked up their logs or got to work because it all went quiet again. Oh well, it’s one way to get an early start.
On our way north to Claire’s we stopped at Salusand, a campsite reputed to have a great beach. The beach was indeed wonderful, though the campsite had obviously been closed for several years. The sand stretched out into the distance, as in the picture, and an equal distance behind us too. There were maybe 30 people stretched out on the sand along the 3 km beach. No one was in the sea. We soon found out why. It was freezing!!!! Not just cold but painfully cold, really hard to stand in, even when only knee deep. The off-shore wind has been blowing for several days now and I think it had literally blown away all the warmer surface water, allowing the deeper cold water to come up to the surface.
Now we’ve arrived at Claire’s, by the river in Umeå, and are settled down for the weekend. Both Claire and Rusty the dog have welcomed us and we await the arrival of more friends tomorrow.
Have a good weekend folks!
