I thought about some of the things I'd read in the files on the flash drive. A few facts were rattling around in my mind:

The fact that the organisation had assessed my invulnerability (Mr Smith's word, but it seemed appropriate) in the same way that they'd assessed others with special ... talents.

The fact that they'd been surprised by the way my "quirk" (again, Mr Smith's word) seemed developed and fully-formed, in a way that they'd never seen before.

And the fact that they'd never anticipated my disappearing before their eyes.

This last fact made me smile, picturing their reaction.

It seemed they'd established a strong connection between the use of Lucidar in pregnancy, and the development of unusual abilities - lying dormant for many years - in the children of women who'd taken it.

Mr Smith had been the one who'd identified the link and had worked to identify, catalogue and counsel the people affected. For him, it had been about scientific understanding, and helping people.

All too late, he realised that there were those within the organisation who thought differently.

All too late he found out about Project Lupus.
