The Rum Story
The dark spirit of Whitehaven
We had to go to Whitehaven today...at one time it was the second biggest port in England.
It was part of the slave triangle...slaves were purchased in Africa, then transported to the New World across the Atlantic where they were sold, in return for more goods. Ten million slaves were carried to the New World!
Sugar production in the Caribbean was stimulated to produce rum...hence the trading continued.
The value of a man was 115 gallons of rum!
