Look at me..

..this male white legged damselfly (in italian wide-pawed or zampalarga) looked me in the eye for quite some time so I wondered what does it see?
Damselflies in general have got big lateral eyes with overlapping visual field of view and they attack a prey that is positioned frontally -dragonflies on the other hand attack them dorsally! I read somewhere that most of its brain is dedicated to analysis of visual info. Well, and collaboration between vision and flight, which is quite impressive!

In addition to the big eyes, the damselflies have got three strongly curved dorsal occelli, or small eyes (see extra) which are believed not to be able to see forms but are used to percieve light, for increased flight stability and maybe also to percieve the approaching shadow of a predator! However, recent studies have shown that in some insects, e.g. dragonflies, the occelli can percieve form and motion.
