Admiral Boscawen

Admiral Boscawen was born in Cornwall in 1711. This is a copy of the figurehead from a battleship named after him. In 1874 after the end of it's working life it was used as a training ship for young offenders (replacing the HMS Wellesley). The name Wellesley was kept for the Nautical School. The school was eventually re-sited at an old submarine base at Blyth and the figurehead was kept as a memory of the link with the sea and was placed at the front of the school.

In 1933 it became an approved school and in 1969 became a community home, and lost its nautical associations. Wellesley was finally closed down by Sunderland Council in 2006.
