Great Crested Grèbe survivor

It looks as though this grebe has one baby that has survived the flooding on the edge of Lake Geneva. It was great to watch it make a quick entry into the water then climb onto mum’s back again. It didn’t seem to be able to walk but appeared to move by jumping. The nest, that was attached to a buoy, is still in tact. Also hanging around the nest were two older babies who I think must be from the first brood as I first took a photograph of this nest on April 30th. See extra for mum, new baby and a juvenile looking for attention. The nest still had one egg on it but I don’t think it will hatch. Another extra shows another family interacting.

It was fabulous to feel the sun on our faces again in Villeneuve this afternoon. The lake is overflowing onto the footpaths but the water appears to be receding now. Our thoughts go to Germany who has been affected far more than us with dreadful loss of life.

Caught up with a friend this morning and met a group of friends for an apéro this evening.
