Rather typical Dutch Landscape

The trees line the road on the top of the dyke (or polder) which is designed to stop any extensive flooding, the river is at the 'back' of the image, so the two houses with the red roofs - so called polder houses - are situated below the level of the dyke in the flood plain, on the far right there is a traditional thatched Dutch Farmhouse. The white ultra modern looking house is about two years old and is an ECO house with a planted green living roof.

Thatch is very common in the Netherlands, and some new environmentally friendly houses are being built where not only the roof but also the walls of the house facing into the prevailing wind and weather are thickly thatched.
