Pounamu

Missymoo's March challenge Day 17 : Green

This is my hei matau, made from New Zealand greenstone (pounamu) and given to me for my 40th birthday by a fabulous friend.

Today in Orkney has been grey and wet and generally horrible and I was struggling to come up with something to photograph until I remembered this.

It is my most treasured possession. I love the shape and the way it feels. I love the colour too. This is the first time I've taken it off since I unwrapped it - maybe I should think about replacing the string on it....

It is a traditional Maori design in the form of a stylised fish hook and to the wearer it gives safe passage over water. I love it.
