Intelligent plant?

The stalk and flower of the cacti has almost entirely been drawn back into the plant. See 3rd July for the flower Blip. I guess the fleshy looking stalk was mostly water which is valuable to the plant and needs to be conserved. Let’s hope it survives for another annual flowering.
