Skipper

We’ve noticed the season’s plant succession more than ever this year. I think it’s because in Arnside and Silverdale the natural flora is just so rich, lots of fantastic meadows and hedgerows. Each time we visit an area it’s a different plant showing up. So this weekend lots of orchids, but the seeding grasses and flowering thistles, as well as ladies smock, are dominating many meadows.

And with the flora come insects, including butterflies. I need to get better at identification, but I think this is a large skipper. It’s large for a skipper, but it’s still small. This angle demonstrates that it’s quite a “ hairy” little thing.
