Kiln Bridge

This is Kiln Bridge, which is a road bridge over the Basingstoke Canal at St Johns near Woking. The inset picture is of a nearby lock which, to my untrained eye, looks in need of repair. The canal, which dates from 1794, is run by a charitable Trust these days. Just by the bridge are the remains of two pillboxes, defensive structures constructed after May 1940 when the country faced the threat of invasion. There was particular concern that the nearby Lye could be used as a landing ground for troop carrying gliders. The threat of invasion passed and the pillboxes, thankfully, did not have to be used.
