Mountain Sandwort
One of my favorite flowers, since it grows right up out of the fine, gravelly deposits which collect in rocky depressions on top of the mountain. You would never think anything could grow in these places, and then one day bam! Little colorful flowers.
These tenacious alpine plants are native to Greenland and Labrador and were likely carried to the area on a continental ice sheet 25,000 years ago. And here they are still toughing it out on the dry exposed granite summits of the island.
Moral of the story: stay on the path and watch where you're putting your feet!
