The Horn

As a recce for a possible trip with the Flumlet we visited Polkemmet Country Park in West Lothian.

Among many attractions is The Horn, designed by Matthew Dalziel and Louise Scullion and inaugurated on the 21st of November 1997 by Magnus Linklater, Chairman of the Scottish Arts Council, as an artwork to be viewed from the M8 motorway. Apparently in strong winds the horn plays recorded music.

We took both recommended walks, the horn being one which also passes the mausoleum to the Bailllie family, who built the original Polkemmet House, demolished in the 1960's. The second walk passes the large playground, which the Flumlet would find most attractive, through woodland. Both routes follow the River Almond in its infancy, on its way to the sea at Cramond. All along the way are wild flowers -  too numerous to name - and ringlet butterflies.

The extra photo I took early in the day. Having just remarked that the magpies were the only birds to use our latest, and third attempt at a, niger feeder, what should appear but a goldfinch, for whom it was provided but none has used this feeder or its predecessor until now. A snap taken from my seat at the dining table, through the window, with reflection on the glass.
