Trews Weir suspension bridge Exeter

Access to the port of Exeter was the subject of various attempts by different landowners to direct lucrative cargo vessels so that they had to pay tolls. The building of weirs to stop vessels and redirect them was one such tactic.
The river Exe estuary was one such battle ground and the delaying tactics of landowners prompted the building of a canal. Which also involved tolls but was run by a company which guaranteed access.
A number of suspension bridges have been built in this slightly confusing landscape of river/canal systems.
