Mansion House, Glenfield Hospital

Len had a call on Friday afternoon to go to Glenfield Hospital this afternoon for another CT scan on his lung. The one he had two weeks ago had revealed a nodule on his lung. I'm glad they're checking up on him although the likelihood is that it's nothing serious.

Basil and I went with him but of course, no dogs in hospital so we pottered around outside under a thundery sky. We came across a very fine house called Mansion House, or Leicester Frith House. It had been built originally in 1870 but was handed over to the government during WW1 to accommodate shell shocked soldiers. After the war, it was converted to a hospital for the mentally ill and then became a centre for those with learning disabilities.

I'm not sure about the meaning of Frith attached to a place name. Several localities around Leicester contain the word Frith. It could be derived from Anglo Saxon or old English when it meant Peace or Freedom. Or it could mean wide valley. Who knows?

Back home now ready to cook turbot with wine and cream sauce.
