The Marvelettes - Uptown (recorded 10 May 1968 to 22 November 1968, Detroit MI)
Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil wrote this originally for Tony Orlando, but Phil Spector persuaded them to give the song for him to record with the Crystals in February 1962, and its style of lyric set a new trend in songwriting. The Crystals version featured some notable Spanish guitar (possibly played by Spector) but not to the extent that the Marvelettes' producers William Weatherspoon and James Dean used on this version that featured on the album In Full Bloom (and again on The Return Of The Marvelettes), that I reached on my Motown CD trawl.
