First picking of cherries

Not much of a photo, more of a record of the cherries we picked today from our “rent a cherry tree” tree. About 6kg of good cherries and 2kg of slightly split berries. Here’s the blip from when we went to view the blossoms on our tree: https://www.blipfoto.com/entry/2832373255921206039

It’s been a really challenging year for the cherries. Late frosts, dry, hot and then wet. And the threat of a pest from the continent. We had to throw away a good couple of kgs of berries that were beyond use.

There are still more to pick, we’ll be back on Wednesday to lick the rest. Maybe the same amount again.

We had a cherry pitter, can we find it? There’s a large number of fruit to deal with. The advice is freeze until you need them then make jam or compote. And, of course eat as many as you can.

First visit to the allotment since our return. Managed to pick strawberries although there were many rotten berries. Harvested first new potatoes, beetroot, spring onions, a lovely bulb of garlic and courgettes. The spuds were wonderful! Lots of work to be done to deal with the weeds and grass paths. I dare say it’ll get done.

On the allotment front the 52% of plotholders voted to oppose the council’s Project A while 37% were happy to move. 11% didn’t cast a vote. So our official position is to oppose the proposal to move us off our site. I submitted a Freedom of Information request to the Council and finished off a flyer for distribution to local residents.
