A sombre 24 hours
Here's an excerpt from the Vancouver Sun about the fire in Lytton BC, (pop 250). https://vancouversun.com/news/lytton-wildfire-two-reported-dead-as-blaze-levels-most-of-b-c-village
The town has basically been burned to the ground. There's also an account of one man who watched his parents die without being able to rescue them in any way. I simply have no words.
"Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth said evacuees fled to reception centres in three different directions from Lytton, but some were unaccounted for.
“Most homes and structures in the village, as well as the ambulance station and the RCMP detachment have been lost,” Farnworth said.
The fire’s cause is still under investigation.
Residents had little time to react after the fire was sparked late Wednesday afternoon, following three successive days of record-breaking hot temperatures that topped out at 49.5 Celsius Tuesday, the hottest ever recorded in Canada. Lytton Mayor Jan Polderman ordered all residents to evacuate immediately around 6 p.m. Wednesday due to the fire, which flashed into an inferno within 15 minutes, and the order was repeated in surrounding First Nations. "
There are currently 87 fires raging in BC, many of which cover more than 150 sq kilometers
This on top of more revelations about 100's of Residential school deaths doesn't make for the happiest of days.
