Lake Hood

It is Saturday and it is supposed to be coffee shop day, but I have committed to transportation week.

This is a Piper Cub on floats (pontoons) at Lake Hood. It still has engine and wing covers. The lake is still iced over and the little cub is up on the shore awaiting melt out. It will then be hauled into the water.

I hear it claimed that in the summer Lake Hood is the busiest float plane base in the world. It's likely true. There are very many locations outside of Anchorage that are only accessible by plane, and many locations do not have air strips, thus the float plane. The pilot will fly from Lake Hood to another lake destination to deliver gear, passengers, or to access a remote cabin.

The little hut is to store provisions and maintenance supplies.

Here is another Piper float plane at Lake Hood.

Look on Google Maps to see the float planes lined up on the shoreline.
