The "Eternal Ice".

Today we went for a walk on the Westerwald. Here at Dornburg, air currents under the loose basalt rubble of the mountain freeze moisture into ice in winter. The air dries and warms up, rises and keeps the surface of the scree slope free of snow.
In summer the air flow is reversed. Warm air then flows into the stockpile from above, cools down considerably and emerges again as a cold air stream at the lower end. It was pretty fresh in the immediate vicinity, even though we were already 25 ° C.
The ice layer extends up to eight meters into the ground and never completely thaws in summer. This phenomenon is unique in Hessen.
