By hopefully coincidence rather than a widespread happening, I heard of someone else getting a nail through their tyre but not their tube on the morning of the evening on which this happened. Being on the wrong side of the bike to see it, I gingerly rode like this from the Bridge St bridge to the sports centre car park until I worked out that it was the nail scraping then pinging off the mudguard. I watched it carefully whilst awaiting the emergence of the child, then got home without anything leaking.
