St Eidin's grave
Visiting a friend in Carrick-on-Shannon for a couple of days and went to see St Eidin's grave. The grave is referred to in the Annals of the 4 Masters in 1636 so must be older than that. She was the patron saint of the ancient parish of Tumna and established a convent there. There is a ruined church where her grave is said to be and this gate is not far from there. It seems very elaborate for a farmer's gate, which is clearly not in use, but there is talk of a holy well nearby and I wonder if it has some association with that? Eleven large gold necklace beads, from the bronze age 3,000 years ago were found in Tumna in 1834 by a local farmer, most of which are now in the National Museum of Ireland.
