Baked from scratch

I don't know how often this traditional Polish bakery opens these days. It caught my eye as soon as we drew up outside the bookshop we were looking for in the Port Richmond area of NE Philly. (We'd made a detour through Tacony to see if there was any sign of the factory where the antique saw I blipped back in January was made; we did find some old industrial buildings down by the river but couldn't be sure.)

Anyway, from what I've found it seems that the bakery has been here since 1922, serving the Polish community then settled around here, and drawing back their sons and daughters who moved out. Another old sign stated
75 years of excellence serving the Port Richmond community. Those who have moved return to their old neighbourhood, some on a weekly basis, just to get their hands on our BABKA European sweet bread filled with raisins, cheese, poppyseed or fruit.

It was a shame we couldn't sample the wares but other than that we had a very full day in New Jersey, visiting a massive market in Columbus and the monument to Thomas Paine in Bordentown - see Guinea Pig Zero's blip. I've returned the compliment here (it might not work).
