K’gari ( Fraser Island)
We left the van at 7.15am and returned absolutely exhausted at 5pm from a fun filled day. There were 11 of us and 3 crew aboard our catamaran cruiser. We travelled up the west coast of the island and had three stops with kayaking up two creeks, bush walks, and other water sports for those inclined.
k’gari is the largest sand island in the world about 120km long and 22k wide. There are approx 250km of sand beaches around the island. I have never felt such soft sand, it was gorgeous. I’m usually not keen on the feel of sand but this was different. K’gari means Paradise in the local Aboriginal language. It is a World Heritage area with a resort and small settlement on the eastern safe. We didn’t see them.
Last year there were bushfires and 2/3 of the island was burnt. I’m pleased to report a lot of the trees are growing back including the area of the main blip which is taken in the Bowarrady Creek. We also kayaked up the Awinya Creek ( aka Divorce Creek). We so nearly went in. Bob and I get on very well but there are times when our communication is poor. Ha ha.
There are many birds, reptiles, wallabies, snakes and spiders but no crocodiles this far south. The most famous inhabitants are the dingos (the purest of them as no dogs have been to the island to dilute their bloodlines). I saw one dingo on the beach as we were heading home and some other guests saw one up close.
I would highly recommend this trip, it was a great day out.
