Surveying the scene
We are at our caravan lodge this weekend. We decided to visit Foulney Island today, within an SSSI, near Barrow in Furness. It’s connected to the mainland by a shingle and rock causeway. It’s a tremendous area for terns - lots of little terns, and also arctic terns at a distance, as well as meadow pipit, linnet, ringed plover and eider duck. An excellent trip made all the better by geographical location, with Blackpool Tower and the Pleasure Beach clearly visible to the south, the whole of Morecambe Bay extending to the east with the Lancashire fells beyond and Lake District fells to the north. It was a fine day too. We were very lucky.
