Grand Tour of England Day 13

Another wonderful day exploring Cornwall. Jan drove us to Potagers, a vegetarian cafe in a garden where we bought a delicious brunch of flatbreads, Kenneth, almonds, chilli oil and flatbreads. Delicious, and good to sit in the sun with her. Unfortunately John is not only diabetic but also is gluten intolerant so he stayed at home.

Then she dropped us off at Helford Passage where we got the ferry over to Helford. From there it was a lovely walk over sunny fields and up beside the shaded Frenchman’s Creek, channelling the inner Daphne du Maurier. It was a pretty walk of about 3 miles, and very peaceful. (Needless to say Mr C had fancied a 4 hour coastal walk from Falmouth but there wasn’t time to do both)

To get back of the river we had to open up a folded disc to show a big yellow circle so that the ferryman would see to come back over to pick us up. It cost £7 each return.

Jan picked us up and dropped us at Glendurgan gardens which she’d recommended last night and I had been able to get a pre-booked timed slot. The gardens were probably past their best but the wild flowers and orchids were out as was a famous tulip tree. There were many exotic palms. The walks headed down to a little beach then up the other side of the Glen back to the start where we were again picked up. All this sounded a lot of driving go me but it turned out it was all only 10 minutes from her house. We had our bikes but she wouldn’t hear of us cycling - the roads are narrow with high walls and hedges right with nowhere to escape the cars. Over 14000 steps.

#3 daughter knows how to wind me up - last night she sent me a photo of Ella and Nathaniel draped in the England flag. My Dad would be turning in his grave. They were watching the football. England 0 Scotland 0. Well done Scotland.
