I went for a wander round The Almond in Mid Calder.

The village used to be an important place with a very healthy economy due to it being a meeting point for the north/south and east/west drover routes with one of the few places it was possible to ford the River Almond.

It was busy enough to support 9 pubs although now there are only 3 (but there are 9 places that cut hair ...... must be a hairy lot).

This is the road bridge into/out of the village which until the East/Mid Calder bypass was opened in about 1980 was the A71 and one of the 3 roads heading west out of Edinburgh and a bit of a bottleneck.
