Calne (Sunday 6th June 2021)

Apparently this is a phenomenon that is more common in the northern part of the country but its appearance on a tree in Calne has occasioned much interest. This silk covering is the work of a group of moths called the Small Ermine moths and occasionally whole trees can be covered by their webs. They can strip a tree bare of leaves and their webs can be so extensive that they can cover nearby objects such as cars, benches and  bicycles. The silk provides protection for the ermine moth caterpillars from avian predators and does no permanent damage to the trees. There can be hundreds or thousands of these caterpillars, but the downside of this strategy is that there were many squished caterpillars on the pavement below.

In Extras is a cat I saw in a front garden on a later part of my circular walk. I returned via the footpath where the three-cornered leeks were, but they are almost over now.

Candi Staton - Breaking Down Slow (2008)
Co-written by Dan Penn and sounding like a seventies Hi Records production this actually comes from her 2008 album, Who's Hurting Now?  It's great to know that this style still exists and Cand Staton has been making great southern soul herself for many years. I heard this from Cerys Matthews show of 16th May but have only just caught up with the programme. The album was produced and engineered by Mark Nevers, but the studio or location is not listed on the album.
