When I did my cycling proficiency at around his age the only section on the road was right outside the school, not at pickup time, with a police who would probably have been enough to frighten drivers to behave, even though the school had already had to start an occasional vehicle restriction scheme as the number of vehicles at collection-time was getting absurd. I'd already been cycling on my own on roads for years at that point. Whilst the safest route home on Mondays evening would be to use as much of the prom as possible, the fact that it heaves with people on warm days makes it worthwhile spending a little extra time on a road to try and pass on some road-sense.
